Owl post it later

Posted by Brent Dixon on April 24th, 2009

Sometimes I have back-to-back bursts of inspiration (read: motor mouth) where I have a lot to say on Twitter. And because you shouldn’t have to suffer through being pummeled with a Twitzkrieg™, we should all be glad that HootSuite exists.

I read about it last week on Alexandra Samuel’s post ‘Three weeks to Twitter credibility, part 1 .’ HootSuite does two things I love:

  1. Manages multiple Twitter accounts, and
  2. Allows you to schedule out tweets to auto-post later on.

So, if need be, now I can automate my minutiae to drop at a specific time in the future.

What apps make everyone’s-favorite-flavor-of-ADD work better for you?

(ps: Get it?)

I like TweetDeck on my computer and Tweetie on my iPhone. Did you know there are now over 700 Twitter apps? Crazy.

I loved Alexandra’s article. Her outline of the first 20 tweets you can schedule using HootSuite is hilarious.

And I really dislike Tweetdeck. It may be better than using the browser to access Twitter, but it is still the worst application I’ve used in the last 5-7 years. Here are just some of the shortcomings I’ve noticed about Tweetdeck:

    • There is no “undo.”
    • There’s no “find” feature for the active Tweetdeck window.
    • There’s no directory of my Followers, Following.
    • No way to classify new people you Follow. You can’t add them to a category until you wait for them to tweet something. Then you have to be lucky enough to see the tweet before being able to categorize them. (Another problem created when you don’t have a directory of Followers/Following.)
    • No way to view your own tweets (without finding something you tweeted first).
    • All profile information in the profile viewing pane isn’t hotlinked. URL, Followers, Following, etc.
    • No option to send a DM to someone while viewing their profile.
    • Sending DMs is a major pain in the ass. How do you find who you want to send the DM to?? There’s no drop down or other similar directory for sending DMs.
    • Full size profile pictures aren’t scaled to fit in the columns.
    • Does not display UTF-8 characters as Twitter does within a browser.
    • Shortened URLs are always put at the end of a tweet instead of where the blinking cursor is positioned.

Love that you can schedule out tweets later on and manage more than one account. Alexandra’s article IS hilarious..but if people really want to tweet and don’t know what to say, then why have Twitter? I think it’s important to consider the purpose of your account. Do we really need to know what people ate for lunch?

I love twitter berry on my storm too, and becoming a big fan of http://www.monitter.com/ too at the moment. Not huge on tweetdeck, just didn’t get on with it…. probably due to the need to undo a lot in my world!!

    Great resource!

If you can read this, you don't use a typical browser that renders CSS.
